The limbic system is one of the oldest parts of the brain. Long before language or logic, it decided what was worth attention, what to remember and what to chase. It runs largely on anticipation: dopamine responds more to the prospect of a reward than to the reward itself.

Once you notice that, you see it in every good game. A rising number feels better than a finished one, and the best loops never quite close — they open into the next small decision. That idea gave us the name, and it's where every game we make starts.
